A new clip from Disney’s Hocus Pocus 2 reveals more about the tragic witch mentor of the young Sanderson Sisters, played by Hannah Waddingham. The highly anticipated sequel to the 1993 cult classic Hocus Pocus features not only the return of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the vengeful Sanderson Sisters, but also a look at their backstory. The official Hocus Pocus 2 The trailer showed what is to come, showing Taylor Henderson as Young Winifred, Juju Journey Brener as Young Sarah, and Nina Kitchen as Young Mary.

In addition to the dear witches who return more earnestly, Hocus Pocus 2 it will also feature a host of new faces. Directed by Anne Fletcher (The proposal) the film sees a new crop of Salem high school students in Becca (Whitney Peak), Cassie (Lilia Buckingham) and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo) lighting the Black Flame Candle and inadvertently waking up the Sanderson sisters. It also promises stories for popular TV stars Sam Richardson (veep) and Hannah Waddingham (ted lasso). The latter apparently plays an older witch, who takes the Sanderson sisters under her wing.

Before the release of the sequel, popular account Hocus Pocus Guide shared a clip of Hannah Waddingham’s character talking to the young Sanderson Sisters in the Forbidden Forest. As she mentions how lucky the trio are to have each other, she hints at her own tragic story. Check out the magical full clip for yourself below:

While Waddingham has already stated that her role is more of a cameo, perhaps there is the possibility of some kind of project centered around her witch in the future. The brief scene appears to follow a moment where viewers were treated to their fullness. Hocus Pocus 2 trailer, which revealed that Waddingham gifted Winifred with his infamous book of spells. It already shows the Sanderson sisters in a much more grounded light than their only comedic fight in the original. Waddingham, by referencing the world’s disdain for witches, hints that the sequel could lure audiences into more sympathy for wicked Winnie, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson.

After Disney released a sitcom Hocus Pocus 2 clip showing the Sandersons flying out of Walgreens, this flashback footage provides a nice contrast. Disney was smart to show audiences that the movie won’t just be a fun rush, it will be based on real pain. Painting the Sanderson villains as more complex characters with specific motivations is a smart move for 2022 audiences. While the original film gets by with its overall charm, adding a backstory to the follow-up is a good sign that viewers could be more involved in the journey of Hocus Pocus 2. All will be revealed when the Halloween event hits Disney+ on September 30.
