Hocus Pocus 2 Billy Butcherson is revived

Why Hocus Pocus 2 Was A Happy Surprise For Billy Butcherson Actor

Doug Jones reveals that the news of Hocus Pocus 2The development of was a pleasant surprise when he was asked to return to play Billy Butcherson. Jones first portrayed the zombie in the original 1993 comedy-horror fantasy film. Hocus Pocus 2 is set to hit Disney+ on September 30, nearly three decades after the first film.

In the original version Hocus Pocus, Jones portrayed Bette Midler’s undead ex-boyfriend Winifred Sanderson, who poisoned and buried Butcherson with his lips sewn shut. Despite their past, Winifred and her sisters resurrected Billy as a zombie to help retrieve their spellbook from Max, Dani, Allison, and boy-turned-cat Thackery Binx. Eventually, Billy turned on them to help the kids defeat the Sanderson sisters once again. In the Hocus Pocus 2 trailer released during the D23 Expo, Jones returns once again as Billy Butcherson, crawling out of his grave and proclaiming he’s a good zombie. While not much is known about Butcherson’s role in the sequel, Jones opened up about his reaction to being approached to reprise his role.

In an exclusive interview with Screen RantJones Reveals He First Learned About Potential Sequel At Celebration Screening Hocus Pocus‘ 20th anniversary. However, it took some time for the project to become official. As the actor did not expect to reprise the role after 29 years, Jones explains that it was a “good surprise,” saying:

Fans have been talking about it forever. But I was at the 20th anniversary screening of Hocus Pocus nine years ago at Disney Park. One of our producers, David Kirschner, was there to talk with my makeup artist, Tony Gardner, and they were talking about the sequel they were offering to the studio. That’s when I realized, “Oh, it could happen,” and then here we are nine years later, finally. So in the meantime, there’s been a lot of rumors and more fan art with like, “Here’s the poster,” and it’s like, “Wait, someone has really good PhotoShop skills, but this isn’t is not yet the case.” [Laughs] So finally, to get a call from Ralph Winter, our producer who was our on-the-ground producer since the first movie, he calls me back and says, ‘Hey, we’re back and they want you back, and here’s the affair.” I anticipated and hoped, but never thought, it’s never expected that I could reprise the role I loved to play 29 years later, it was a nice surprise and very nostalgic.

As Jones says, we talked about a Hocus Pocus 2 in every corner of the internet for years. Rumors and fan art can put a person off, but they can also highlight slow progress behind the scenes. After all, if fans can conceive of well-done art multiple times before Disney even announces the project, it’s easy to believe the movie will never come to fruition. Therefore, it’s understandable that Jones might have started to suspect that he might never play Billy again. The fact that Jones returned to this character nearly 30 years after first playing him shows how Hocus Pocus lives within pop culture and further fuels enthusiasm for the future.

Despite the long gap between the original film and the sequel, Hocus Pocus 2 is a highly anticipated release for Disney+, with the film potentially setting up future sequels if it meets Disney’s expectations. While the original has earned a place in the hearts of the public as a cult classic, Hocus Pocus was not a box office success upon its initial release, making a sequel less likely despite garnering a strong fan base over time. As such, Jones’ pleasantly surprised reaction is something many fans can relate to, as for many years the potential for Hocus Pocus 2 seemed unlikely. Despite so much time passing, fans will be thrilled with the return of Billy Butcherson and the Sanderson sisters when the sequel debuts on Disney+.
